REGIONAL PROFILE

OVERVIEW OF CENTRAL VERMONT

Its diverse industrial base, a long-standing tradition of manufacturing excellence and craftsmanship, strong work ethic of our people, and efficient transportation networks make Central Vermont a prime location for business.

Central Vermont’s population and urban resources are concentrated in Barre, Montpelier, Waterbury, Berlin, Northfield and Waitsfield, adjoining centers of industry, government and commerce.

MONTPELIER

Montpelier, the state capital, is home to National Life of Vermont, state government offices, four colleges, several financial, insurance & real estate (F.I.R.E.) companies, and professional services with a growing industrial base. Montpelier is also the site of a newly constructed multi- purpose Civic Center.

FACT: Montpelier’s population doubles during the day to approximately 20,000 people.

BARRE & BARRE TOWN

Barre City and Barre Town, drawing on its strength of more than a century of excellence in manufacturing and granite quarrying, is the industrial center of the region. Industries include electronics, mass transit manufacturing, and granite, while its downtown is comprised of retail shops and professional services.

BERLIN

Berlin, situated between Barre and Montpelier, is a fast-growing retail center with several shopping plazas and a mall. In addition, there is a mix of light manufacturing and distribution companies, as well as Edward F. Knapp Airport, Central Vermont Medical Center, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Vermont, restaurants and hotels.

WATERBURY

Waterbury is at the crossroads between world class resort and recreation areas in the Waitsfield/Warren area and Stowe. This highly traveled area is home to the production facility of Vermont’s most highly recognized product, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Waterbury is also home to gourmet coffee gurus, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Suss Microtech, a German-based manufacturer of high-tech machinery, as well as State government offices. A short distance from Burlington and Stowe, Waterbury also enjoys a newly constructed, world-class golf course, Country Club of Vermont.

NORTHFIELD

Northfield claims Norwich University, the nation’s oldest private military school known for its engineering and computer science programs. Norwich’s presence dominates Northfield with its campus, its new, state-of-the-art arena/convention center and outdoor sports facilities. Northfield is also a growing industrial area, particularly in wood products and textiles.

WAITSFIELD & WARREN

The Waitfield/Warren Area, known as the "Mad River Valley", is the site of two topnotch ski resorts, Sugarbush & and Mad River Glen, as well as Controlled Energy Corporation, Northern Power Systems, Small Dog Electronics and numerous specialty shops.
