Horn of the Moon Tour...

(Approximately one hour)

The Horn of the Moon is a short, but very scenic tour of the hill country surrounding Montpelier. There are some beautiful views of the unspoiled Worcester Range as well as a most interesting view of Montpelier.

Begin at the State Capitol and head downtown to the light at Main Street where you will turn left.

Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Parlor is on the right where you can stop now or when you get back from your tour.

As you travel up Main Street, you will pass three churches and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, as well as a number of beautiful older homes.

At the fork in the road (round-about) bear right continuing on Main Street. The first street past the Montpelier Main Street School is North Street where you will be turning left and heading up into the country.

The road climbs steeply out of town. You can look down on the left and see the Montpelier Recreation Field and swimming pool with a spectacular view behind you of the city nestled in the valley.

As the road levels off at the top of the hill, beautiful views of the Worcester Range unfold before you. This is a favorite spot for snowmobiling and cross country skiing in the winter months.

Turn left onto Hill Road. The Sparrow Farm had been farmed by three generations.Turn right onto Jacobs Road; you will be headed to the area called the Horn of the Moon.

Go straight through the 4 corners, this links you around the Horn of the Moon. Continue through a one-lane "bridge" and you will come to the Wrightsville Dam. As you cross the dam you may see people boating and water skiing.

The dam was built in 1935 by the CCC Flood Control Program to help prevent a repeat of the devastating flood of 1927. There is a public recreation area at the other end of the dam.

If you have had enough back road travel, turn left on Rte. 12 and head back to Montpelier.

Want to continue on? Take a right onto Rte. 12 and then the next left onto Culver Hill.

Gerald and Ellen Pease's farm is on the left. Mr. Pease still rides his tractor through the woods to Church in Shady Rill every Sunday to start the fire.

The Worcester Mountain Range is straight ahead. As you drive on and come up to an intersection, turn left. You will get a lovely view of the Green Mountain Range and Camel's Hump as you come up over the hill. When you arrive at the next road intersection you will be in Middlesex Center.

Take a left turn at this intersection and follow this road over the hill and back toward Montpelier. After several miles the road becomes paved. It brings you through a nice residential area into the city. Turn left at the light to return to the center of Montpelier.
