Northfield, VT
Founded in 1819, Norwich University is a unique institution
that allows students to attend college as a member of a Corps
of Cadets or as a
traditional undergraduate. Founder Alden Partridge believed the
educational experience should prepare college students 'to discharge,
in the best
possible manner, the duties they owe to themselves, to their
fellow men, and to their country.' Through nearly two centuries
of changes, Partridge's vision remain the cornerstone of Norwich.
The University prides itself in continuing to offer traditional
majors that have been its hallmark, including civil engineering
and military science, while developing new programs to meet society's
evolving needs, such as information assurance and an online MBA
program.
Students who enroll in the Corps of Cadets follow a disciplined
military regime, while civilian students lead a more traditional
collegiate lifestyle. Both groups reside on the Northfield campus,
attending classes and participating in sports and other activities
together. In keeping with its mission, the University provides
opportunities for all students to develop leadership skills and
a strong commitment to community service.
Mission Statement
Norwich University shares with other colleges and universities
a dedication to the discovery, preservation, and dissemination
of knowledge and to the search for truth. It is distinctive in
that it maintains a strong emphasis on the development of leadership
in both civilian and military pursuits and in providing for the
educational needs of both traditional and non-traditional students
through lifelong learning opportunities in a variety of educational
modes. Its mission is to foster in each student the growth of
the self-discipline, personal integrity, social responsibility,
physical fitness, respect for the law, and intellectual ability
essential for full and effective participation in a free society.
